Vice Rector I UMJ: UMJ Ready to Provide Scholarships for Palestinian Students
Muhammadiyah University Jakarta (UMJ ) through Vice Chancellor I stated its firm stance in defending and supporting Palestinian independence. Dr. Muhammad Hadi, M.Kep., called for the Israeli attacks to be stopped. Apart from that, representing UMJ, Hadi expressed his readiness to accept and provide scholarships for students from Palestine to study at UMJ.
This statement was delivered at the Solidarity Seminar and Action for Gaza Palestine which was held at the Kasman Singodimedjo Hall, Tuesday (31/10/2023). When asked for information after the event, Hadi said that UMJ supports activities and actions in solidarity with the Palestinian struggle.
“We should stimulate or increase our sense of concern for the Palestinian people. "As the UMJ community, we should support the Palestinian people when they experience difficulties," said Hadi.
The seminar, which was initiated by the Political Science Study Program and the Master of Political Science Study Program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences ( FISIP ) UMJ, carried the theme Strengthening Indonesian Policy towards Palestine and was held in a hybrid manner. Participants are Political Science students at FISIP UMJ and the general public.
On that occasion, there were speakers from various backgrounds, namely the Director of the Friendship and Civilization Studies Foundation, Dr. Ahed Abu Al Atta, DPR Member from the PKS Fraction Ledia Hanifa Amaliah, S.Si., M.Psi.T., Director of Fundraising Lazismu PP Muhammadiyah Edi Muktiono, and Political Science lecturer at FISIP UMJ Drs. Sumarno.
DPR member Ledia Hanifa Amaliah stated that the government had made efforts through diplomacy and policy to stop Israel from carrying out attacks on Palestine. “Our defense of the Palestinian people is part of the constitution. "In the Preamble to the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia, it is stated that independence is the right of all nations," stressed Ledia.
Ledia emphasized that helping Palestine is not only because of the identity of fellow Muslims, but Indonesia has a historical debt to Palestine. Among the countries of the 1955 Asian-African Conference, only Palestine has not achieved independence.
In line with this, Dr. Ahed Abu Al Atta, emphasized that Palestinians have the right to freedom. According to him, the escalation carried out by Israel is increasing, one of which can be seen from efforts to divide the Aqsa Mosque between Muslims and Jews.
Ahed admitted that she was happy to be able to join the seminar. He advised students, especially FISIP UMJ, to provide assistance and support in the form of campaigns on social media to counter fake news spreading about the condition of Palestine, holding demonstrations and other efforts.
"I advise students, that God willing, you will become future leaders who will have a role in this nation and Palestine. The Palestinian people need help and support. So please provide as much help as possible," he said when asked for information after the event.
Lecturer in Political Science, FISIP UMJ, Dr. Sumarno, who explained the Palestinian issue from a historical perspective, emphasized that the Indonesian people should defend and care about Palestine.
"From an Islamic perspective, it is very clear that we must care, not only because Palestine has an extraordinary history, but also about fellow Muslims. Then this is also a humanitarian issue. "So do what we can, for example donating," said Sumarno.
In this case, PP Muhamamdiyah has allocated aid funds of more than 27 billion rupiah. According to Lazismu PP Muhammadiyah Fundraising Director Edi Muktiono, this assistance is not enough. Therefore, on that occasion, Edi invited all seminar participants who were Political Science students at FISIP UMJ to make donations through Lazismu.
